The paper established assessment indicator system with 17 indicators. The indicators could reflect the level of
regional water resources carrying capacity based on natural geography and social economic conditions of Xiangyang City,the
middle reaches of Hanjiang River. Vector norm method was used to evaluate the water resources carrying capacity of Xiangyang
during 2000 to 2012. The results indicated that the water resources carrying capacity leval of Xiangyang was relatively low,
which varied from 0. 2939 to 0. 4114,but had a tendency of improvement. As the middle route of Chinese south-to-north water
transfer project achieved water diversion for the first time in 2014,the contradiction between supply and demand of water
resources would more prominent due to the reduction of discharged water. Research results could provide theoretical reference
and practical guiding for Xiangyang to use water resources appropriately and enhance ecological environment construction,so
as to decrease the negative influence of water diversion and achieve sustainable development.
